Trity Pourbahrami to moderate panel on Zoroastrian Parenthood

Moderated by Trity Pourbahrami, the panel entitled Navigating Zoroastrian Parenthoodwill discuss the challenges and opportunities of raising children in North America.  The panelists will share their unique approaches to balancing school, children’s extra curricular activities, the demands of their career, religious education, and involvement with the Zoroastrian community.  The main objective for this panel is to engage Zoroastrian families with young children to be more active in the community by creating a forum for them to learn from each other.

Trity Pourbahrami is the Director of Communications for the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Division of Engineering and Applied Science and the Editor of the award winning publication ENGenious.  She has Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics and Physiology and Masters degrees in Social Welfare and Public Administration.   She is also a certified mediator and facilitator.

Trity and her husband, Peter, live in South Pasadena, California with their two young daughters Neeku and Meena.   The family is active in the Iranian and Zoroastrian communities, where Peter and the girls are taking Persian Language (Farsi) classes and Trity is teaching the Gathas.

Trity was eleven years old when her family immigrated to Canada and succeeded to leave the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as the Iran-Iraq war.  As a young adult she was very engaged in the local and international Zoroastrian community including serving as a President of the Zoroastrian Youth of North America (1997-1999).

Dr. Maseeh on Venture Philanthropy

MC MaseehThe Congress Committee is pleased to announce that Dr. Fariborz Maseeh will speak to delegates on Venture Philanthropy: An Investment Approach for Public Benefit.

Dr. Maseeh currently manages an investment firm consisting of hedge funds, real estate funds, educational and entertainment operations. He also is the founder and president of The Massiah Foundation, a charitable organization, which invests in transformational situations for broad public benefit.

Dr. Maseeh has scientific publications in business strategy, fabrication technologies, design of software for micro-scale devices, and has authored a number of patents and trademarks. He has also been invited to give numerous talks on science, entrepreneurship and philanthropy at various organizations.

Dr. Maseeh has a Bachelor Degree in Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Applied Mathematics from Portland State University, a Masters of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Doctorate in Science degree in Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Maseeh is a member of MIT Corporation, board of fellows of Harvard Medical School, executive member of California Council on Science and Technology and Trustee of The Foundation at University of California at Irvine (UCI) and Portland State University. He also serves on the engineering advisory boards at several institutions. Dr. Maseeh has received a number of medals and recognitions including Ellis Island Medal of Honor, Simon Benson Medal (City of Portland), the UCI Medal, PSU Presidential Service Medal, USC Viterbi Award and various others

Fariborz Rahnamoon on The Gathas

MC RahnamoonThe Congress Committee is pleased to announce that Fariborz Rahnamoon will address the Congress in a presentation entitled The Gathas: A Beacon in the 21st Century.  

Mr. Rahnamoon was born in Yazd, and raised and educated in Bombay.  He has lived in Iran and Australia, and now, is settled in Vancouver, Canada.  Mr. Rahnamoon is the editor of “Iran Zamin”, a bilingual research magazine on ancient Iranian history and religion, and webmaster of www.ancientiran.com.

Over 40 years of research has provided Mr. Rahnamoon a unique perspective on Zarathushti religion and history.  He opines that our Zarathushti history, which has come down to us, has been written by our adversaries over the last 2000 years. Western scholars who laid the foundation of the translated Gathas have led us astray. Mr. Rahnamoon’s findings and views are available on his website www.ancientiran.com.

Mr. Rahnamoon is the President of the Zoroastrian Society of British Columbia (ZSBC), the Chair Person of Arbab Rostam Guiv Trust – Vancouver, Director of WZCC and Founder & Chapter Chair of WZCC-BC.

Zane Dalal to Speak on Zoroastrianism for the Next Generation

The Congress Committee is pleased to announce that Zane Dalal will speak at the Congress.  Mr. Dalal’s presentation is entitled Zoroastrianism and the Next Generation.

Zane Dalal was born and educated in England.  Awarded an Organ Scholarship to the University of Oxford, he held the position of Choirmaster and Organist at Oriel College Chapel from 1983-1986.  He holds Masters Degrees in Music from both the University of Oxford, U.K and from Indiana University, at Bloomington.

Zane continues to pursue a career in music as an orchestral conductor, conducting several professional orchestras all over the world.  He currently holds the position of Associate Music Director with the Symphony Orchestra of India, a new professional international ensemble founded in Mumbai in 2006.   He also serves on the management team of the National Centre Performing Arts, Mumbai and lectures extensively on a wide range of topics.

Zane’s love of history and theology has followed him through his career.  Frequently invited to speak on theological perspectives, he is deeply interested in Zoroastrianism and issues that concern our community today.

Bhesania to Present at NAZC 2014

MC BhesaniaThe Congress Committee is pleased to welcome Malcolm Bhesania to the Congress.  Mr. Bhesania will make a presentation entitled Proud to be a Zarthushti! Learning from the Past, Looking to the Future.

Mr. Bhesania has a keen interest in the religion, history, customs and traditions of ancient Iran. As a tour leader, he has guided over 20 tours to Iran, enabling Zarathushtis to explore their history and heritage in their ancient homeland.

As a software engineer, he has designed business applications for Fortune 500 clients.

Ervad Parvez Bajan on Faith and Unity in the Parsi-Iranian Zoroastrian Diaspora

The Congress Committee is pleased to announce that Ervad Parvez Bajan will speak at the Congress.  Ervad Bajan’s presentation is entitled Across the Arabian Sea. . . But for the Faith and Unity.

Ervad Bajan is a qualified priest having undergone his Navar and Maratab in Navsari at a very young age. He is also a graduate in Physics and Mathematics from The Royal Institute of Science, Mumbai and also holds a post-graduate degree in Law, specializing in International Law and Criminology. He was awarded gold medal for his Masters Degree in Avesta, Pahlavi and Ancient Iranian Languages from Mumbai University.

At present, Ervad Bajan is a lecturer in Avesta, Pahlavi and Ancient Iranian Languages at St. Xavier’s College Mumbai and Principal – Sir J. J. Zarthoshti & Mullan Firoze Madressas, Mumbai. He is a Trustee of the Athornan Mandal – the apex body of the Zoroastrian clergy. He is also a member of the Governing Body of the K. R. Cama Oriental Institute.

Ervad Bajan has presented several research papers at National and International Congresses and Seminars on Iranian Subjects and has given numerous talks on religion, history and Shahnameh in India and abroad. Apart from his scholastic pursuit, Ervad Bajan is the Panthaky (Head Priest) of Seth B. M. Mevawala Fire-temple in Mumbai which is managed by the Bajan family for six generations since the enthronement of fire in the year 1851.

Dr. Boyce to Speak on Zoroastrian Entrepreneurship

 

MC BoyceThe Congress Committee is pleased to welcome Dr. Meherwan P. Boyce to deliver a speech on The Era of Zoroastrian Entrepreneurship in 21st Century USA.

Dr. Boyce arrived in the US at the age of 18 from Mumbai, India.  At the age of 26, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.  At the age of 35, he was Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University.  He founded with his wife, Zarine, Boyce Engineering International Inc. a global engineering company with offices in numerous countries. In 1997 the company was sold and a new company The Boyce Consultancy Group LLC, was formed which presently has contracts in the US and seven other countries.

Dr. Boyce was the Chair of the VII North American Zoroastrian Congress, held in Houston in 1999.  At that Congress, Dr. Boyce introduced a session entitled The Zoroastrian Business Network.  The seeds of the World Zoroastrian Chamber of Commerce were first introduced in his speech on Zoroastrian Business Foundation Entrepreneurs during that session.  Dr. Boyce and five other Zoroastrians established the Chamber in 2001.  Dr. Boyce has been a Member of the Zoroastrian Association of Houston since 1977, and a life member of the World Zoroastrian Organization and a Vice President of that organization since 1991.

NAZC 2014 Call for Posters!

Poster Session ImageIn an effort to engage young Zoroastrians attending the Congress, NAZC 2014 invites you to participate in the  Congress’ Poster Session.  The session will allow young Zoroastrians to engage with their heritage in an environment that showcases and celebrates their creativity.

A few requirements are set forth below, but we encourage you to follow your bliss in the creation of your poster and presentation!  Prizes are in the offing and we wish all our participants the best of luck with their artistic endeavors!

The World Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra (WZSO) is looking for Zarathushti musicians of all ages, to play at the XVII North American Zoroastrian Congress to be held in Los Angeles from December 29 to 31, 2014.

The WZSO unites Zarathushtis from the world over to provide unforgettable musical experiences, under the baton of its Music Director, a professional conductor, Farobag Homi Cooper of Chicago.

Jahanian and Rose to Speak at NAZC 2014

The Congress Committee is pleased to announce that Dr. Daryoush Jahanian and Dr. Jenny Rose will speak at the Congress this December.

Dr. Daryoush Jahanian is a co-founder of the Fravahar Zoroastrian Youth Organization in Iran and the Zoroastrian Association of Kansas (ZAKA).  He served as the first President of both organizations.  Dr. Jahanian is also a Trustee and President of the Rustam Guiv Foundation.  A frequent speaker on Zoroastrianism, Dr. Jahanian has published a book entitled The Zoroastrian Doctrine and Biblical Connections and several articles on Zoroastrianism.

Born in Tehran, Iran, Dr. Jahanian currently resides in Kansas City, with his wife and two sons.  When he is not studying, speaking or writing about Zoroastrianism, he practices medicine, with a specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Jahanian will speak on the History of Zoroastrians through Political Analysis and Historical Letters at the Congress.

Dr. Jenny Rose teaches Zoroastrian Studies in the Department of Religion at Claremont Graduate University.  She holds a doctorate in Ancient Iranian Studies from Columbia University, New York. Her dissertation was published in book form as The Image of Zoroaster: The Persian Mage Through European Eyes (Bibliotheca Persica Press, 2000). In 2011, Dr. Rose published Zoroastrianism: An Introduction (I.B. Tauris), and Zoroastrianism: A Guide for the Perplexed, (Continuum), both of which have been favorably reviewed in the US and abroad.

Dr. Rose lectures extensively at other academic institutions, museums, international conferences and Zoroastrian Association events throughout North America and Europe. She also leads study-tours of some of the most important archaeological, cultural and devotional sites in Iran Central Asia and western China.

Dr. Rose will bring her work to bear on a presentation at the Congress that considers the Zoroastrian connection to other cultures.
