A statue of Cyrus the Great was unveiled in Atlanta Georgia this weekend. During the Civil Rights Movement, Atlanta was home to a number of people including Martin Luther King Jr., and Former Congressmen John Lewis who fought tirelessly to ensure equality for all of America’s citizens. The statue of Cyrus the Great stands besides other revolutionary fighters from around the world who fought for a more equitable and just future for their communities.
Abtin Shahriari, a local Zarathushti from Atlanta reports on the event…
The unveiling of the Cyrus the Great statue in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 28, 2023, was an immensely momentous occasion for my family, Atlanta Persian cummunity and Atlanta Zoroastrian Community. We felt deeply honored and moved to have been part of this monumental historic event. The profound significance of this event, enriched by its historical and present day context, is truly immeasurable. Notably, the teaching of the Gathas, Zoroastrian sayings, and the recognition of Cyrus as the “King of the World” contributed significantly to the event’s historical weight and resonated deeply with those of us present at the monument’s unveiling.
Furthermore, it was my distinct pleasure to meet Rostam Zafari, a 26-year-old Persian entrepreneur, inventor and poetry enthusiast, who played a pivotal role in funding the creation of the statue. His contribution is truly commendable and his legacy forged literally in stone. The opportunity to listen to his speech and engage in conversation with him were experiences of great honor.
This event held profound significance, not only for the global community but especially for the Iranian people and their rich history. It was a genuinely uplifting experience, uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds and races, reflecting the values championed by Cyrus the Great – Freedom, Equality, Justice, Tolerance, Respect, Wisdom. I firmly believe that the memories of this event will be cherished by people who were in attendance at this special event for the rest of their lives.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to The National Monument Foundation and The World Within Foundation for making the unveiling of the statue of Cyrus the Great at the Millennium Gate Museum in Atlanta’s Nimrooz Park on October 28, the birthdate of Cyrus the Great, a reality.
