SUMMARY OF MEETING WITH WZO REPRESENTATIVES – APRIL 28-29, 2001

APRIL 28, 2001

PURPOSE:

  • The meeting was called to order by Framroze Patel 9:30 a.m. He requested Rustom Kevala to moderate the meeting.
  • The purpose of the meeting was to exchange views and gather information.
  • A message from Dr. Farhang Mehr was read by Khorshed Jungalwala.

STATUS REVIEW:

  • Rohinton Rivetna summarized the remaining concerns of the Regions.
  • Kaikhosrov Irani reiterated that WZO’s latest draft provides a proper balance and guarantees the independence of the COF and the COI.
  • Rustom Kevala stated that the mandate of the FEZANA officers was to have FEZANA’s overall interests uppermost in their negotiating positions, without taking sides for any Member. He summarized FEZANA Members’ remaining concerns with WZO’s December 2000 draft constitution.

WZOs POSITION:

Rumi Sethna, Chairman, and Rustam Dubash, President of WZO presented the recent ruling of the UK Charity commissioner. This ruling will require some changes to the language of some of the clauses.

DISCUSSION OF ISSUES:

  • The following major issues were discussed:
    1. Duties and voting structure of the International Board
    2. Need for proxies
    3. Definition of "Zarathushti"
    4. Financing of COF
  • Representatives from Houston, Boston, California, Ontario, Quebec, New York, TMZA, Atlanta and Michigan participated in a vigorous discussion. WZO representatives provided their comments when requested.

ADJOURNMENT:

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 pm after a decision to meet again on Sunday morning to come to a consensus with WZO and discuss the next steps.

FINAL DISCUSSIONS:

Rumi Sethna presented WZO’s assessment of yesterday’s discussions. They would have to get the revised constitution approved by the present membership of WZO.

NEXT STEPS:

  • FEZANA secretary will provide a detailed summary of the meeting.
  • WZO will provide alternative organizational structures to satisfy FEZANA’s concerns and the recommendations of the UK Charity Commission.
  • FEZANA Members will approve one or more alternatives at the AGM. The Regions will also review the alternatives at a meeting on June 4.
  • The revised constitution will be submitted by WZO on June 30.
  • The Final Draft will be ready for voting by August 2001.
