Zoroastrian delegation to deliver a panel discussion at the United Nations,
As part of the 66th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66)
NEW YORK, January 31, 2022 – FEZANA will be participating at the 66th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) Conference to be held at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA.
This year the CSW66 priority theme is, “Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes”. FEZANA has put together a team of delegates that will be attending the conference.
Carina Daruwala, Maya Joshi, Feroza Jussawalla, Afreed Mistry, Behram Pastakia and Anahita Verahrami from FEZANA will be representing the Zoroastrians at the UN. The group will be presenting a panel discussion titled, “Cross Cultural Connections: Environmental Concerns and Female Empowerment”. The panel will cover how environmental concerns are addressed by different cultural groups and are linked to female empowerment. It will also cover what we as a global community can do to support the enrichment of both. Examples will be shown from India, Africa, North American Indigenous peoples and will make connections back to Ancient Persians.

Carina Daruwala
Carina is from Westchester, New York. She is a first-year student at Georgetown University in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, hoping to pursue a joint major in Business and Global Affairs. Carina is passionate about politics and international affairs, enjoys musical theater and has performed choral music internationally. Carina loves to travel and spend time with her family. This is Carina’s first presentation at the United Nations CSW.
Maya Joshi
Maya is from Louisville, Kentucky. She is currently a student at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, where she is pursuing a double major in Foreign Diplomacy and Modern Languages, specializing in Chinese and Spanish and minoring in Asian Studies. After graduating, Maya wants to sit for the Foreign Service Officer exam and become a member of the United States Foreign Service. This is Maya’s first presentation at the United Nations CSW.
Feroza Jussawalla
Feroza is Professor Emerita at the University of New Mexico in Abuquerque, NM. She has taught English Literature, specifically Postcolonial Literatures for over forty years, both at the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of New Mexico. Feroza is the author of Family Quarrels: towards a Criticism of Indian Writing in English; and editor of Conversations with V.S. Naipaul, and co-editor of Interviews with Writers of the Postcolonial World; Emerging South Asian Women Writers; Memory, Voice and Identity: Muslim Women’s Writing from Across the Middle East. Her collection of poetry is entitled, Chiffon Saris. This is Feroza’s first presentation at the United Nations CSW
Anahita Verahrami
Ana is currently completing her Master’s degree in Ecology at Colorado State University where she is investigating how poaching is impacting forest elephant activity. In addition to her wildlife conservation work, Ana has a strong interest in helping expand community-based conservation initiatives such as the formation of all-women anti-poaching patrol groups. Ana is a Return to Roots Fellow, co-chair of the FEZANA Zoroastrian Youth Without Borders Committee and has served as a delegate for the FEZANA UN-NGO Committee since 2017, making numerous presentations at the UN.

Afreed Mistry
Afreed is from Toronto, Canada and has been an active member of FEZANA since 2002. She co-chairs the FEZANA UN-NGO Committee along with Dr. Behram Pastakia. Afreed is also the main representative for FEZANA at the United Nations. She has attended and presented at eight United Nations’ CSW Conferences and also been a part of the UN DGC Conferences, Parliament of World’s Religions and attended numerous UN meetings.
