Description
Zoroastrians of Iran: A History of Transformation and Survival by Janet Kestenberg Amighi
This book examines the struggles and adaptations of Zoroastrian communities in Iran from 1850 to 2020. It relates how facing discrimination and pressures to convert, the community was just able to survive the 19th century. The 20th century Pahlavi shahs elevated the Zoroastrians and while life improved, simultaneous secularization of society challenged their cultural survival. With the rise of the Islamic Republic in 1979 past discriminations were revived. Islam permeated Iran yet modernization continued, leaving the Zoroastrian community with a two-front challenge that continues to this day.
The book includes two chapters on the Zoroastrian religion as viewed by Zoroastrians in Iran. After a brief history of Zoroastrianism in Iran, the book focuses on social, economic, and ritual developments from 1850 to 2020.
